Neon Art
Handwriting becomes glass. Glass becomes light.
Missy Sunseri creates contemporary sculptures and mixed-media works in real glass neon, transforming handwriting, drawing and painted surfaces into illuminated compositions.
In her text-based neon works, words and phrases begin in Sunseri's own handwriting. The gesture is then translated into hand-bent glass neon tubing, preserving the individuality of her written line as it moves from drawing to physical glass and finally to light.
Her practice encompasses standalone neon sculptures as well as works combining acrylic painting, mixed media and real glass neon, alongside select commissioned and site-specific installations.

The Handwritten Line
Language in Sunseri's work is not typeset before it becomes neon. The words originate in the artist's own hand.
Each handwritten composition begins as a drawing — a gesture with its own rhythm, imperfections and personality. That line becomes the basis for glass tubing that is individually bent by hand and illuminated.
What remains is not the uniformity of a font, but the character of handwriting translated into another material.
“What begins as the movement of the artist's hand becomes a physical line in glass, and ultimately, light.”
Real Glass Neon · Portraiture
The face returns as line and light.
In VESTIGES IN LIGHT, Missy Sunseri carries a recurring language of portraiture beyond the painted surface.
Faces that emerge through pigment, ornament and layered material in her painting practice are distilled here to an elemental gesture: line translated into hand-bent glass and illuminated.
The works retain the immediacy of drawing while taking on a sculptural and architectural presence. Against a wall, encountered across a room or conceived at a more monumental scale, the illuminated face exists somewhere between drawing, sculpture and light.
The relationship to Sunseri's wider practice is intentional. Across painting and neon, the face is not treated simply as portraiture, but as a trace — something remembered, obscured, revealed and transformed through material.

Scale changes the relationship between the artwork and its surroundings.
An illuminated face at a more intimate scale can appear almost discovered within a room — a gesture of light held against architecture. At larger scale, the same line can assume a commanding spatial presence, moving beyond the object to become part of how the room itself is experienced.
For select commissioned works, scale, glass color, placement, viewing distance and architectural context may enter the conversation with the artist.
From painted surface to illuminated line, the face moves through Sunseri's practice as a recurring gesture. Vestige holds that language in pigment, material and ornament; in VESTIGES IN LIGHT, the face leaves the painted surface and enters space through hand-bent glass and light.

VESTIGES IN LIGHT may also be considered as a commissioned work.
Sunseri can develop an illuminated face at a scale appropriate to its intended setting, from a more intimate sculptural presence to a large-scale or site-specific installation.
Selected glass color, proportion, placement and the relationship between the illuminated line and surrounding architecture may become part of the development of the work.
Each commission remains rooted in the artist's own drawing and visual language. The objective is not to create decorative signage, but an original work in real glass neon conceived in dialogue with its setting.
Commission inquiries are welcomed from private collectors and residential clients, as well as interior designers, architects, art advisors, hospitality teams and other creative professionals.
Across VESTIGES and VESTIGES IN LIGHT, the face moves between surface and space — from layered pigment and ornament to a single illuminated line.
Exhibition Installation · 2025
In 2025, Missy Sunseri presented an installation bringing together painting, mixed media and real glass neon within a single environment.
The presentation included acrylic paintings on canvas incorporating hand-bent glass neon, text-based illuminated works and freestanding sculptural pieces.
Throughout the installation, Sunseri's own handwriting moves between surface and space. Words written first by the artist are transformed into physical glass lines and illumination, creating a direct relationship between gesture, language, material and light.

Commissions
Sunseri accepts select commissions for original real glass neon artwork, including handwritten words, phrases and compositions developed in the artist's own hand.
A commission may begin with language, an idea, emotion, drawing, color or the architectural character of its intended setting. Sunseri develops the handwritten composition as an original artwork before the line is translated into hand-bent glass.
Commissioned works may exist as standalone illuminated sculptures or combine painting, mixed media and real glass neon within a single work.
Commissions may be considered for private collections and residential interiors as well as hospitality environments, interior design projects and select creative productions.
